Melior, Inc. announces Barbican RNP (Real-Time Network Protection) for the complete defense against Denial-of-Service attacks

Dallas, Texas, November 26th, 2004 - Melior announces the introduction of it's flagship new product, Barbican RNP (Real-Time Network Protection), replacing the previous iSecure product line.

(Mission Statement Logo - centered)

The new Barbican product now protects against virtually all forms of distributed Denial-of-Service (dDoS) attacks, both as a perimeter defense against intruders from the Internet (for request flooding in conjunction with the ISP for upstream deployment), as well as within large networks at critical interconnection points between subnets against internal intruders and compromised systems.

(Barbican Product Line Logo - centered)

As an in-line appliance, the Barbican RNP system is not detectable via MAC layer spoofing or IP address scanning. Traffic passes through the RNP system in near-real-time with an average of less than 10 ms latency across all protocols. The product does not require any changes to the infrastructure to deploy.

Additional modules for defenses against content/payload-based attacks, as well as detail report modules, will be available separately. Invalid traffic is discarded; through intuitive administration via a third network port, communicating on a secure network connection, it can be configured to send standard 'syslog' alert messages to third-party monitoring systems.

Barbican RNP detects and defends against low-level and bandwidth request flooding dDoS attacks (the latter for upstream deployment as an ISP-based service), TCP/IP network stack attacks, and intercepts and responds to all Penetration Testing attacks, precursor for many other intrusion attempts; thus making the components of the protected infrastructure invisible to the attacker. The product defends against known and unknown ("zero-day") attacks, and does not operate on a signature/library basis. It it effective immediately upon deployment, and does not require a "learning curve" or baselining of the environment it is deployed in.

It is the only system available which protects against the threat of telephony dDoS attacks on UDP-based Voice-over-IP (VoIP) infrastructures, which is now often replacing standard POTS telephone PBXs. During a VoIP dDoS attack, in-bound and out-bound calls are not interrupted, sound quality does not degrade, and call placement either way is not affected.

Other feature examples: dDoS DNS query attacks on UDP port 53 are ineffective; DNS lookups continue to function with a Barbican RNP system without impact. The same holds true with TCP-based services, such as HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, SSH, and all others. Barbican RNP also eliminates TCP traffic from "spoofed" (invalid) IP addresses.

The system currently supports in- and out-bound connections up to a Gigabit (10/100/1000 Mbit/s), with an effective throughput capability of 400 Mbit/s. Future versions will support higher bandwidth connections, and increased processing capabilities for specialized environments.

With the Barbican RNP system, Melior believes to introduce a new foundation layer of network security, unintrusive for valid traffic, yet eliminating the threats of Denial-of-Service and Penetration Testing attacks, while protecting addressable firewalls and the remainder of the protected infrastructure from these risks.

The benefits of full perimeter and internal deployment of the Barbican RNP appliance are uptime during dDoS attacks, decreased bandwidth costs and no revenue loss during bandwidth request flooding attacks, and the decreased IT staff costs due to drastically reduced log sizes in firewalls and Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), reduced need to rebuild firewalls, servers, desktops, and other devices from TCP/IP stack attacks, reduced compromises from worm attacks and their follow-up costs due to elimination of penetration testing for yet-uninfected systems, as well as budget benefits from improved reporting on valid vs. invalid network traffic.

In the Americas (North-, Central-, and South America) Barbican RNP is offered at US$18,000, with the first year of Service & Maintenance included. In Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world, Barbican RNP is offered at Euro 18,000, also with the first year of Service & Maintenance included. A list of resellers is available on the Melior web site at www.dDoS.com

With the introduction of the Barbican RNP product, the previous TCP-only iSecure version will be discontinued. All existing customers receive Barbican RNP replacement units at no cost under the service & maintenance agreements.

"We are quite pleased to announce Barbican RNP as the conclusion of our long development cycle," says Michael Rathbun, Vice President of Product Development at Melior. "It demonstrates our commitment to our mission, to provide the best working tools to eradicate the increasing risk of dDoS attacks from e-commerce businesses, life lines of manufacturing infrastructures, government installations, and the communications infrastructure upon which so many businesses, governments, and individuals depend." He continues: "We will continue to provide many specialized adaptations of our Barbican product line, and focus now on other forms of traffic and content, which can cause denial-of-service conditions, such as Spam. After successfully tackling the dDoS problem, we can now concentrate on other Number 1 problems in related fields on the Internet."

Matt Gair, Melior's Co-Founder, adds: "During the development cycle, we were often asked to assist in the defense against many of the dDoS attacks during this time. In summer 2003, we deployed an early pilot system at a large ISP, successfully protecting a popular web site with 2 billion page views per year against TCP-based dDoS attacks. Later, in fall 2003, we protected the remaining anti-Spam blacklists Spamhaus, SORBS, and SPEWS through a combination of pilot systems, several alpha- and beta-stage product code, and other efforts; resulting in 300 million users across many governments, large businesses, and many universities being able to continue to filter Spam through these blacklist databases." He goes on: "While we were certainly very pleased to be able to make such a difference, we continued to work towards providing the easy-to-deploy, effective product, which truly delivers a solution against dDoS attacks on all protocols and OSI levels. Our first efforts and interim-release product was a stepping stone towards this goal, but we knew we were not done until we could introduce Barbican RNP, which can be easily deployed by simply plugging it in, and optionally configure it for alerts and reports."
